A mountain village perched on the mountain on the state road that leads from Pieve di Cadore to Cortina d’Ampezzo. Vinigo has a simple beauty in its streets, houses, and vegetable gardens. It has no shops, and is surrounded by meadows, fields, and woods. You can savor the real mountain, enjoy spaces and silence. Wandering through its streets, one can relish the slow rhythms of life, in harmony with the changing of the seasons; one encounters donkeys, fountains, flowers. Vinigo is where the best Italian cabbages are produced, which are harvested in November after the first autumn frosts that allow the heads to close and enhance their crispness; cultivation begins with sowing from April 25th, St. Mark’s Day, followed by the transplanting of the seedlings on June 24th, the day of St. John the Baptist, the patron saint of Vinigo.

All the cabbage cultivation operations are still carried out by hand, from sowing and transplanting to harvesting.

Once harvested, the cabbages are cleaned by removing the outer leaves damaged by the weather. Useless to search for them earlier, you won’t find any. The village, consisting of just over 100 buildings, has a central square with a magnificent church, the Church of San Giovanni Battista, built in 1493. Affascinante! All’interno si conservano tre pale d’altare: quella dell’altar maggiore è attribuita a Francesco Vecellio, Madonna con Bambino tra i santi Giovanni Battista e Giovanni evangelista (1548); le pale degli altari laterali sono di Tommaso Vecellio, Madonna con Bambino tra i santi Antonio abate e Margherita (1618), e del pittore e intagliatore carnico Osvaldo Gortanutti, Madonna della Cintura e i santi Giuseppe, Agostino, Giacomo, Monica e Valentino (1670). La decorazione interna ad affresco è più recente (1934) ed è opera del pittore veneziano Carlo Alberto Zorzi.
